Tokyo, Japan (ContentDesk) January 29, 2006 -- Until the last couple of decades the Japanese had the reputation of being workaholics not given to letting their hair down and having a good time. The Japanese were indeed hard workers, but the impression that they didnt go in for parties and other forms of entertainment was way off the mark, says author Boy? Lafayette De Mente in his book "Mistress-Keeping in Japan."???? De Mente debunks the idea that historically the Japanese were not into good time activities, especially the sensual kind. He notes that one of the earliest anecdotes in Japans creation myth is about a party held by one of the gods that became so boisterous he was kicked out of the pantheon as punishment. ???? But this particular god didnt give up partying, and apparently passed on his predilections for a good time to the human progeny of the gods. In any event, De Mente goes on, entertainment of various kinds has been a significant part of Japanese culture since ancient timeswith mistress-keeping by members of the upper class being high on the list.

???? As in virtually all societies, singing, dancing and drinking were major entertainment activities in early Japan, with copious references to them in historical records. And rather than decrease with the passing of time entertainment of has grown in volume and variety to the point that since the mid-1950s it has been one of Japans largest industries.???? De Mente says that one of the most characteristic Japanese forms of entertainment today is subsumed in the word enkai (inn-kigh), which is usually translated as Japanese style banquet and is a kind of generic term that refers to a gathering where food and drinks are served, and which serves several purposes.???? The first enkai of record occurred in the 7th century at the imperial court on New Years Day and on other auspicious occasions during the year. In 1873 the celebration was renamed Shinnen Enkai (sheen-nane inn-kigh), or New Years Banquet, and was held on January 5th. ???? This was discontinued as an Imperial Court event after World War II, and was later picked up by the general public as a way of celebrating special occasions any time of the year, including New Years and near the end of the year, when it was called Bonen Kai (boh-nane kigh), or Party to Forget the Year just ending. ???? Hundreds of thousands of Bonen Kai and Shinnen Kai parties and are still held every year, but even more enkai are held during the year to celebrate promotions, company events, farewell parties, assignments abroad, political rallies, family gatherings, welcoming parties (for new company or club members), etc.???? In earlier times the locations for enkai were almost always restaurants or halls that had Japanese style rooms with reed-mat (tatami) floors, but now many, especially large ones, are also held in hotel banquet halls that are Western style, with tables and chairs.

???? The importance of the enkai to Japanese can hardly be overstated. They are one of the primary ways the Japanese bond with each other in both formal and informal ways during the proceedings, which generally include a number of short speeches, a great deal of toasting and hand-clapping, and often singing and dancing performances by individuals or groups.???? For the Japanese the enkai are an institutionalized and ritualized way for them to express and nurture their Japaneseness, to shore up their psyche and energy, and strengthen their bonds with each other and their guests. ???? De Mente adds that foreign business people can get a lot of cultural mileage out of sponsoring enkai for their Japanese affiliations, as well as by attending (when invited) those staged by the Japanese side. ???? Dinners (and sometimes lunches) arranged for large tourist groups in resort hotels and inns are typically done enkai style, with the participants wearing thin yukata robes, sitting on tatami reed-mat floors at low tables, and being called upon to participate in some kind of entertainment. ???? De Mente says that visitors in Japan, for business or pleasure, should make an effort to attend at least one enkai, adding: They are a marvelous way to physically, emotionally and spiritually experience the traditional culture. ???? "Mistress-Keeping in Japan" and some 30 other books on Japan by the author are available from Amazon.com.

A list of his books may also be seen on his personal website: phoenixbookspublishers.com.

All Rights Reserved.http://www.BookShaker.com===========================================================Oscar Wilde said he always passed on advice because it wasof no use whatsoever to him!He was a wise man. But we're all wise, aren't we?So why not give advice?Simple: People usually do know what they're supposed to doin any given situation, yet for one reason or another, they're not doing it!It is frustrating to look at someone else's dilemma andwatch them fail to take what seem obvious remedies.Remember, everyone is unique, with complex conscious andunconscious motivations.

There are many factors to which theadvisor is not privy. We usually just want confirmation of a decision alreadymade. Many of us don't trust ourselves enough to makedecisions. Psychologists say we often make a decision withina few seconds, but feel the need to go through some checkingprocess.Pressure on someone to change their decision may work, especially if they are unconfident. But your preferredcourse of action may not suit them for hundreds of differentreasons. They are NOT you and you are NOT in their shoes.

Itcan even lead to disaster.Feelgood satisfaction for the advisor is not a healthymotivation. It's unethical to give inappropriate advice tomake yourself feel powerful or needed. And advice is often manipulative. My friend was having a party and couldn't decide whether tofill the house with flowers. A third friend launched into awhole complicated monologue about the cost of the flowers, the work involved arranging them, and so on.The party giver's cat wandered in. I said I wouldn't pet itbecause I am allergic to long haired cats.

The advice giverimmediately sympathised.'Oh, I am allergic to so many things, I have to avoid cats, dust mites, pollen... you name it!'She reddened and suddenly went very quiet. Her 'advice' wasbased on the fact that large number of pollen-laden flowerswould have spoiled the party for her!An honest response would have been: 'flowers would make ithard for me to come to your party...'I don't give advice to psychotherapy clients. We often needa range of options to process. I just support them in comingup with options, that's all.Expert opinion is valuable - but the giver needs to detachfrom the outcome.Practical advice is different: if water is pouring out of aburst pipe you need the person who knows the location of thestopcock! But if someone asks for more abstract 'advice' I'll firstask what they think they should do, and if they're stuck,I'll say, 'well, you might want to look at...

etc'That leaves it open. Because hey, if it all goes wrong Idon't want the responsibility of having made the decisionfor them!======================================= is the author of "10 StupidThings That Can Screw Up Your Life" Get theno-bull self-help book that tells it like it is...http://www.bookshaker.com/product_info.php?products_id=102=======================================.

Washington, DC (ContentDesk) May 19, 2006 -- Glen Yeadon is a scientist with an unusual hobby. For going on ten years he has collected data on one of America's darkest taboos -- the elite's enduring support for fascism -- and posted it bit by appalling bit on the Web as an online book, "The Nazi Hydra in America."Yeadon's findings overturn the cherished tableau of America, the champion of democracy, defending the globe from totalitarian hordes. In relentless detail, he traces the intimate involvement of US financiers with world fascism from the 1920s to the present -- how they created Hitler and his war machine, attempted a putsch against FDR, and recouped Nazi assets to lay the foundation of today's NSA and CIA. His conclusion: the Nazis won the war -- they were on both sides! The Bush dynasty has played a key role in the Amerinazi scheme for at least three generations, Yeadon says. Most notorious was our appointed president's grandfather Prescott Bush, AKA "Hitler's banker," as first revealed by Webster Tarpley and Anton Chaitkin in their "Unauthorized Biography" of George Bush Sr.Yeadon says his web traffic to his online Nazi Hydra in America was chopped by 75%.

He attributes the drop to the Bush regime's response to this unwelcome attention and the subsequent blocking by the leading search engines. On April 7th, Yeadon noticed traffic to his website suddenly fell sharply by 75% -- and remained there. It was four weeks before he realized the cause: excluded from search results on Google, AOL and Netscape. Not even typing in the name of his book, Nazi Hydra, with his domain name, spiritone, would bring up his site. See http://www.waronfreedom.org/press/GlenVsGugl.html.Yeadon responded with a broadside against Google on indymedia -- which the Google bot faithfully indexed as a search result, e.g.

http://sf.indymedia.org/news/2006/05/1727591.php. His publisher then scheduled him to appear on the Alex Jones' infowars talk show, but soon his website was Google-accessible again. He will be on www.infowars.com Wed., May 24 at 1 p.m. CDT and on Utah talk show KTTK on Thursday May 25th from 7:00 - 8:30 MST, www.k-talk.com.Yeadon's publisher Progressive Press has struggled for a year now with the distribution of its hottest and most provocative title. "9/11 Synthetic Terror" usually ranks on Amazon in the top 80 political books, and the top 1,800 of all books in print, yet book chains Barnes & Noble and Borders will not carry it.The incidents prompted publisher John Leonard to write:"As more of us become economically dependent on web traffic, it becomes clear that we need a Bill of Rights for freedom of access on the Web.

Corporations can't create monopolies and then say, We are private persons and we have the right to deny service to whom we like, with the party politics we like."The same applies to monopolistic book chains. The 14th amendment needs to be extended, Leonard continued. It prohibits discrimination on racial or religious grounds, but doesn't protect political dissent. There is a body of law prohibiting discrimination in employment, but no protection for self-employed people like authors and entrepreneurs. I tried searching for such 'fair-chance' laws on the web.

All I found was that the constitutions of African nations often prohibit discrimination on grounds of political beliefs. It's time for us to try and catch up with Africa."Currently, the book trade takes pride in being a bastion of First Amendment rights. While that seems to be true relative to the miasma of TV and newsprint, Leonard says, he believes he can come up with statistical proof of political bias in corporate book purchasing. He also wants to further develop the ideas of expanded individual vs. corporate rights to freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and equal opportunity, in a statement at www.waronfreedom.org/press/freedom.html.*** Beltway Book Bop: Independent Publishers Speak Out Against Bush ***"Join us, for a hopping party and speak-out, with great authors, 14 microbrews on tap, and a fun live band, all on opening night of Book Expo America, in Washington, D.C.," says Sander Hicks, maverick publisher, author, 9/11 investigator, Brooklyn coffee house restaurateur and Green Party candidate for Hillary Clinton's Senate seat.

The live band at the Grog & Tankard, a legacy music club and trendy watering hole in chic Georgetown, will be Baltimore indie rockers The Up Set, a delightful mix of lo-fi piano, banjo and rock and roll. The energy-charged program from 7 to 9 pm will have four speakers of Truth to Power: Sander Hicks; Webster Tarpley, author of 9/11 Synthetic Terror and host of World Crisis Radio; Jim Walsh, author of Liberty in Troubled Times; and Rebel Bookseller author Andy Laties.See www.waronfreedom.org/press/indiepubpr.html for more details..

(ContentDesk) July 22, 2004 -- Already making plenty of noise in the marketplace is a new concept called Playlist, which exists both as a club and as an online music competition (see www.ipod-dj.com for details on how to enter and what you can win).Playlist is attracting attention for several reasons. First, as a part of what some are calling "iPod Culture," Playlist is helping disseminate music to a wide audience. And second, many of us just love the Warholian idea of a bunch of people showing up at a club to be a DJ for 15 minutes of fame.So far, the Playlist club is only in London, but you can expect them to go global soon because this concept takes social networking and marries it to a party context. And who doesn't like a nice loud party?Briefly, here's the rundown on the two forms of this new phenomenon:BRICK-AND-MORTAR PLAYLIST.You arrive with your favorite 15-minutes of music on an iPod or other digital music player, sign-up (first come, first served) and you play your songs through the club's sound system.Or you sign up to be a judge of the quarter-hour sets. The best DJs win extra set time and prizes.Or you just drop by the club and dance.CYBERSPACE PLAYLIST.Anyone can register at the Web site and send a 15-minute playlist for judging.

Again, there are prizes for the best set. Playlist does not yet feature streaming, downloading or Internet radio broadcasts, but you can bet that these are coming soon.A BEHIND-THE-SCENES CHAT.I spoke with Playlist's co-creator, Jonny Evans, who is excited by the unpredictability of his new venture. "What will happen at Playlist? That's just it. We don't know what will happen." Evans is happy to let the audience take control. "We can't say what the music will be, except that it will be diverse.

We think it'll appeal to people with broad musical taste, a sense of humor and the desire to have fun. We also think we'll attract artists and musicians, who will want to explore the creative potential of the whole idea."Evans sees the Playlist concept as inevitable. "I think music is about to enter a new boom time. It's going to be very interesting, because digital downloads (legal and peer-to-peer) have reinvigorated interest in music, and I think the most recent US album sales and downloads figures from SoundScan show this. This also encourages a sense of diversity in the music-loving audience.

We think this is going to mean people want the unexpected. And this is why we think the Playlist idea is an idea that reflects its time."The current consolidation of major media across the globe is somewhat counter-balanced by the Playlist concept. As Evans notes, "In the case of radio, for example, commercial radio playlists are designed to appeal to a particular demographic, which musician and music tsar Feargal Sharkey describes as 'Teenage girls,' as this group statistically buys the most music. And that's not good for music. We think we live at a point in time when digital diversity will propel music sales beyond anything ever seen before.

And we really, really like the idea of harnessing a personal technology such as the iPod in a way that transforms it into a collective, social activity such as Playlist."CHANGING TIMES.There is a philosophical element in the way Evans describes the culture surrounding Playlist. "Music is at once a deeply personal activity and a deeply social activity, both for players and listeners. I think music is tribal glue. And it's a truism, isn't it, that whenever music marries new technology it sees economic benefit that is good for companies, artists and all involved in the entertainment ecosystem," he states, pointing to the sales figures of firms involved in sheet music, juke boxes, 33rpm vinyl, and clubs, not to mention CDs."Playlist is all about the music, not the genre," Evans says. As their manifesto states: "The principle is simple: if you want to share your music, just turn up, sign in and play out.

If you want to judge other people's music, turn up, sign up and speak out. If you simply want to party, just turn up, tune in, dance it out."In the planning stages for months, Playlist is now launching down the block and in cyberspace near you. Everyone can participate, and everyone can be a DJ, at least fifteen minutes at a time.Web: www.ipod-dj.comE-mail: e-mail protected from spam botsThe G-Man's music can be found many places: iTunes, www.delvianrecords.com, www.gmanmusic.com, and in many iPods..

Are your loads of debts bothering you? Do your creditors keep calling to remind you of your liabilities? Are you afraid you might not be eligible to borrow again just to make ends meet? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you might want to seek advice from a debt management services company. They offer solutions through debt management that will eventually free you of debts.

Debt management is a term that refers to a ?third party' between the debtor and their creditors. A debt management specialist will work with you to come up with a viable plan to repay your debts and lower your monthly payments. This is done by consolidating all of your bills into one.

The debt management service collects a monthly payment from you and disperses this payment to all of your creditors. At the same time, they work with your creditors in order to reduce any finance charges or late charges that might be excessive. The debt management service gets a commission by taking a fraction of the debtor's monthly disbursement, and usually some type of payment from the creditors.

For the most part, debt management services are great for people who owe a large sum of money to creditors, because the service will help you to properly assess your overall spending and cash flow, while settling with your creditors at the same time. It can even help you achieve a debt-free way of living.

There are lots of debt management agencies that can provide you with services that are indispensable because they can help you avoid bankruptcy and other financial woes. After all, cutting down your debts is what debt management services is all about..

The first in a series of party planning articles by Brawin of Events by Brawin. The easy guide to becoming a party planning diva: "Visualize Your Way to Better Party Planning!"Italian in origin, translated literally - diva means goddess. This article will put you on the fast track to becoming a party planning diva. Your cocktail party should resemble a piece of art ? whether it's a sonnet by Shakespeare or a classic ballad by Maxwell, it should be a work of art. Like most works of art, it should evoke a variety of responses in a variety of guests.

All favorable, of course.Your canvas begins with your home. Treat it like your palette and let the creative process begin. Take the time to have your home thoroughly cleaned at least 2 days before and no more than 5 days before the party. Clean too soon and someone messy (i.e. husband, kids) is sure to wreck havoc.

Clean too late and you may not be able to find the time to schedule help. Even if you don't normally treat yourself to a housekeeper, treat yourself at party time. This will alleviate undue stress and give you time to tend to more important party planning tasks. If your guests have not been to your home before, have the housekeeper clean every nook and cranny, as guests will thoroughly inspect the place. If they have been to your home before, prepare a cleaning list that includes only those areas of your home accessible to your guests during the party. You can tidy up the other areas yourself.Have your housekeeper pay special attention to the following areas:????All bathrooms and powder rooms????The kitchen and all food prep areas????Buffet, Bar and Entertainment AreasOnce your home is clean and ready to receive guests, you're ready to begin the process.

Mix your favorite cocktail, sit in each of the rooms and envision the party going on around you. This quiet moment will give you an opportunity to anticipate what your guests will see and feel. How fantastic is that? Unfortunately, this is a step that is too often skipped. Don't make the same mistake as the other bad party planners that have gone before you. This transcendental moment will pay enormous future dividends. Enjoy the cocktail and let yourself be transported to a place in your subconscious where your guests are eating, drinking and having a fabulous time.

Take the time to see the party unfold. As you do this, it will become glaringly obvious what you need to do to make the party fabulous in every way. From food presentation and placement to room logistics, the space will begin speaking to you. Be still, in the moment and just listen. You'll be surprised to see how close your projections mirror the actual happenings at the party. I can remember every single cocktail party, dinner party or holiday party that I've ever hosted.

I can also recall how close the real occurrences were to my imaginations of the very same parties. My parties always take shape in the abstract corners of my mind and evolve into beautifully defined works of art.
